Shipwrecked on Skull Island

Go to Sea No More...
En Guarde You Fiend!

So last weeks session was moved from Wednesday to Monday due to unexpected freelance work (YAY!) anyway our castaways were in the pirate town of Al-Khaimah where they were throwing back to back huge parties as an excuse to spend a lot of gold and pieces of eight to get bonus XP.

Every 8 silver or 1 gold spent gives the spender 1 XP.

Anyway at Yuzeed’s party, a horrible plague victim played by our friend Katie Limon (she rolled really poorly for scores and couldn’t meet the requisites for any other class) snuck in to sample the expensive food, and Yuzeed offended the pirate king Lucanther Hape who challenged him to a duel, Yuzeed accepted on the condition that his champion, Rashad abu Akbar, fight in his stead.

The pirate king Hape provided magical epees for the two to fight with.

Rashad and Yuzeed fenced by moonlight to first wounding (half hit points). Rashad proved himself in battle, dodging and parrying every attack until he ran out of Dexterity points but when Lucather Hape finally landed a blow it so badly injured abu Akbar that he was reduced to just above half hp. The impressed pirate king conceded the duel and awarded Rashad a chest full of treasure, having no interest in killing a stranger over a tiny insult, but Hape did get the magic sword he had loaned Rashad back.

For defeating a 9th level combatant, the 2nd level Rashad abu Akbar received 900 XP. His weapon mastery with swords also increased as he was unable to land a strike upon the pirate king Lucanther.

Horrible monster from beyond time, I choose you!
Summoning for fun and profit

So this week, the thief, the fighter, and the cultist were joined by the witch hunter from the first session. They set about cooking the dead devil lizard, and distributing it to the castaways who have spread out around a six or seven mile area. The strong and well equipped former crew have taken control of the remains of the shipwrecked forecastle, while the weak and sick plague ridden have been forced to take shelter near the tree line of the jungle, with everyone else camped out in between their distance from the two camps determined by their relative health and fitness.

The cultist spotted a group of sharkmen riding sharks heading toward the shore and sounded the alarm, various survivors prepared a defense or ran for the hills while the PCs attacked the sharkmen and with the help of a summoned giant crabmonster servitor from beyond time that the cultist brought forth from the Outer Dark which slaughtered everything it could get its claws on before the assembled might of the PCs overcame it.

The PCs proceeded to harvest crabmeat and shell from the beast before making preparations to head south along the shore. The witch hunter also recovered a cursed magic item, a golden clam shell idol that has an 80% chance to call forth devastating storms, conversely it has a 13% chance to call lightning down on a specific target three times per week.

The PCs also used whips to enslave a trio of castaways to help carry their stuff, however after traveling south for a day they attempted to use the cursed idol to attract the attention of a passing canoe but instead summoned a hurricane that lasted 14 hours and carried off all three of the hirelings and destroyed the canoe. The cultist summoned a White Ape to carry his stuff, and they continued south.

Where they encountered another group of Sharkmen that pursued them for six hours before they lost them in the jungle. The cultist attempted to summon another servitor and got a slimy skeleton that could emit a disorienting song, the skeleton broke free of the cultists control and attacked the thief only to be slain. The cultist then summoned up a brain spider that was riding the zombie of a dead noblewoman to again carry his stuff.

The PCs then spotted an incoming storm and decided to hide out in a crashed floating disc that contained six pure quartz crystals worth 160 gp each (960 gp total).

Naked except for a cow bell...
More cowbell!

So the fighter and the thief met a naked prisoner that had survived the shipwreck with only a bell at the ruined tower by the lake. They proceeded to assist the prisoner, whose name was Yuzeed abdul Al-hazred. They helped Yuzeed steal a 40 pound ruby (worth 2,000 gp) from the tower and take it into the lake bed revealed by the psychic force. Yuzeed proceeded to explore a cave that would have been underwater had the lake waters not been parted by the psychic force emanating from the tower.

The fighter’s concentration slipped however when he and the thief discovered a trio of red apes that appeared to be addicted to the red powder entering the tower and proceeding to its top. The fighter and the thief ended up jumping out the window to escape.

They met up with the naked prisoner, and headed away from the tower encountering a grave as they did so, and looted it for a deadmans boots for Yuzeed, and headed back to the lake to water up. There they found evidence that a burial ceremony had been abandoned by a tribe of locals, who were hiding just out of sight in the tree line. The three castaways decided to sneak away rather than risk open conflict.

They ran afoul of a devil lizard, and managed to kill it somehow.

They made a trip back to the site where they had killed the three pirates to get more clothes for Yuzeed and recover Rashad abu Akbar, the fighter’s lost arrows, of which he was able to find 2. They then headed back to the shore where they had washed up to tell the others where to find freshwater only to discover that the forecastle had washed up.

Castaways Explore Skull Island
What a lovely bunch of coconuts...

Gheisari, Rashad abu Akbar, and a mysterious witch hunter all awoke on the shore of the isle. Also on the shore were a variety of survivors from the doomed prison ship that had sank the night before. The beggar Gehisari noticed that along the tree line there was a straw effigy of a man with a coconut for a head tied to a palm tree. He quickly began to shout to get the attention of other castaways. The two former prison ship enforcers: Rashad and the witch hunter were swayed by the protestations of the beggar Gehisari that the three of them should head inland away from the other survivors to insure that they would not catch the White Plague which some of the survivors no doubt carried.

So the fighter, the hunter, and the thief headed first west along the shore until they spotted a hill in the jungle, and then headed for the hill. Climbing up the hill they saw brightly colored birds, monkeys, and many many coconuts. They also found a copse of purple flowers growing near the bloated maggot ridden corpses of several dead monkeys. Giving the dead monkeys a wide berth, Gheisari collected coconuts from a tree as the others used the advantage of the high hill to look over the treeline and deeper into the jungle.

They caught sight of two tall mountains whose peaks smoked ominously and whose profiles resembled two great horns. The castaways also noticed a ruined tower in the distance that looked to be at the edge of a body of water, and so they started to head to the tower. As they approached they heard the sound of drums. Heading further into the jungle toward the drums, they happened across three pirates, one of whom Gehisari knocked out with a well thrown coconut. The other two succumbed to the prowess of the fighter and the witch hunter who brought them down with a well placed scimitar stroke and a hip shot flintlock, respectively. Looting the bodies, and slitting the throat of the unconscious survivor, the three men dressed in the pirates clothes and headed still further into the jungle.

When suddenly out of the foliage in front of them whipped a two foot tall lizard as if spooked by something. Seeing the lizard, Gehisari climbed a tree to scout around and happened to spot a fearsome war party ten men strong of scantily clad island natives festooned with human bone jewelry, and spears. A trio of them appeared to be carrying blowguns. He whispered to the others, who tried to hide. Gehisari and Rashad were successful, but the witch hunter was not. The tribesmen got the drop on the witch hunter zealot but the two hidden men got turned the tables. Gehisari threw his dagger and managed to deflect a thrown spear with his buckler, while Rashad cut down two more tribesmen, and the witch hunter led four tribesmen on a merry chase around the battlefield. Only to suddenly turn and fight after he had led them straight back to Rashad. The battle was over just as quickly as it had begun.
